J.T. IV - Cosmic Lightning

Seriously damaged loner-punk weirdness from late 70s/early 80s Chicago, recently rescued from terminal obscurity by Galactic Zoo Disk/Drag City. The lp-only release comes packaged with a DVD of live performances and home videos that is worth the price of admission alone. While you're waiting for the second pressing, have a listen.

The Anticipation Proclamation

November 27, 2008

Wonder Wheel 17: Hello Picture! will be the first piece of 21st Century Music. The composition will properly herald the second millennia of the Common Era and verify the Future World envisioned by the speculators from the 1920's, 1950's through 1970's.

Future Music is the result of imagination and the anticipated creation within composed works. Highlighted points of musical perpetuation include the atonal development of Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), the compiled sounds of "Poéme Électronique" by Edgard Varèse (1883-1965), the Sonic Signatures and Electronic Pop productions of Joe Meek (1929-1967), and the variation of tape and melody on "Discreet Music" by Brian Eno (1948-Present).

Utilizing Pop Music constructs (i.e. Western Scales, Verse/Chorus Structure, Conventional Rhythm, etc.), variations on melody, isolation and repetition of structure, false tempo, and folk-historical rhetoric provide the grounds to establish the Future Music of the 21st Century.

To combine the Future World with the Future Music, the tools and machines used in the documenting process acknowledge both worlds of digital and analog technology.
1. Recorded onto tape machines of the 1980's and 1990's
2. Performing with a digital interface of analog equipment
3. Manipulated by tape speed and/or pitch of plug-in
4. Transferred to computers of the mid 2000's
These primary directives are used to establish unique Sonic Signatures and conclude the composition.

All previous creations from the years of 2000-2007 have reflected the world of the 20th Century, relying on previous conventions and thematic influence to create music of, and not for, the new millennium. Until now, there has been no perpetuation to embrace 21st Century Music, yet the metropolises of the United States are very aware of the Future World aboard television billboards in public spaces, touch screen computer interfaces, and personalized global positioning systems. These details, current fashions, and consumption of media and technology outline present living in the Future World.

Welcome to the 21st Century, a period that acknowledges the many advances in technology and shifts in past societies. We are not to concern ourselves primarily with the theories and philosophies of the past; moreover we acknowledge and emphasize their truths to build upon the fundamental institutions, to provoke a new Future World.

Doug Snyder & Bob Thompson: Daily Dance (1973)

"...who could have guessed that a drums/guitar duo recorded in a kitchen in Ohio in 1972 would sound this good in 1998? I cannot think of anything remotely comparable being made anywhere else on planet earth at the time. The playing is all-round splendid, unfettered and un-self-conscious, and in its day can now be said to have set an invisible benchmark. Absolutely the year`s most amazing out-of-nowhere archival find. Forgotten brilliance stylishly revived." - Nick Cain (Opprobrium)

the blithe sons: arm of the starfish

From Aquarius Records:
You know how you can 'hear the sea' when you hold a conch shell up to your ear? Well imagine listening to a conch shell and hearing not just surf but also some gentle, haunting improvised psych-folk sounds inside there as well. That's what you get with this new Blithe Sons disc. Yes, Jewelled Antler drone minstrels Loren Chasse and Glenn Donaldson (1/2 of Thuja) return again with recordings from their travels to some of the more scenic, out of the way spots in the Bay Area. Did I say scenic? I mean sonic. The darkness of a dank old abandoned army bunker might not be the most picturesque sight 'round these parts, but the sounds Loren and Glenn conjure within its confines are a moody delight. Of course that bunker (and other sites these two visited) are near the quite picturesque Pacific, the ocean providing the seashore/undersea imagery and inspiration for Arm Of The Starfish. The hiss and hum of the Blithe Sons' field recordings of their own musical activities could be the sea in the distance... This cd is really lovely and droney and it makes me imagine that they have overloaded a ramshackle rowboat with their 'instruments' -- guitars, harmonium, bells, tape recorders, bits of driftwood, glassy pebbles, rusted metal, who knows? we're just guessing -- and floated out on an ancient lake, becalmed in the evening dusk, to sing softly as their boat slowly sinks and the sun sets.

Stay Tuned.

"The 22-letter alphabet did not lead to a society of literate Israelite readers, but a society of hearers, who would gather to hear the Torah scroll read to them by a priest. The printing press and television set did not lead to a society of writers and producers, but one of readers and viewers, who were free to enjoy their own perspective on the creations of an elite with access to the new tools of production. And the computer has not led to a society of programmers, but one of bloggers -- free to write whatever we please, but utterly unaware of the underlying biases of the interfaces and windows that have been programmed for us."

Clara Mondshine "Luna Africana" (1981) (45 RPM)

Excellent cosmic, almost "minimal" synth record from the alter-ego of Walter Bachauer, onetime member of the ethno-kraut band Between, who also worked with David Behrman on "A Traveller's Dream Journal" and "Interspecies Smalltalk" in the late 1980s (available on the Leapday Night CD), just before he committed suicide (bummer). Released on Klaus Schulze's Innovative Communications Label.

This was posted on Mutant Sounds a couple months back at the wrong speed (supposed to be a 45 RPM'er but it sounds great at 33 as well). More info and cover scans there.

There is another sweet Mondshine record, Memorymetropolis, that is worth checking out, where Clara fully descends from that African moon into the jungle.

And I have a rip of Visions of Audio the last record Clara made in 1987. It's pretty spotty compared to these two, so probably only for the die-hard Mondshiners. Maybe I'll post it if there's any interest, but these two records are f*cking awesome.

So here you go, Luna Africana at 45 RPM, as it was meant(?) to be heard.

Four Tops - One Chain Don't Make No Prison

Jon Hassell "Dream Theory in Malaya" (1981)

"Dream Theory in Malaya is titled after a paper by visionary anthropologist, Kilton Stewart, who in 1935 visited a remarkable highland tribe of Malaysian aborigines, the Senoi, whose happiness and well-being were linked to their morning custom of family dream-telling—where a child's fearful dream of falling was praised as a gift to learn to fly the next night and where a dream-song or dance was taught to a neighboring tribe to create a common bond beyond differences of custom."
